Caring for your furniture

A little regular care helps keep your furniture looking its best. This guide offers general advice: always follow the care and assembly instructions supplied with your particular piece, as materials and finishes need different treatment.

Gentle everyday cleaning

Remove dust gently with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth. Avoid rubbing grit across the surface. Where the manufacturer permits damp cleaning, use a well-wrung cloth and dry the surface promptly. Never soak furniture or allow moisture to collect around edges, joints, fittings or cable openings.

Blot spills promptly rather than scrubbing. Before using any cleaner, check that it is suitable for the exact material and finish. Follow the manufacturer’s directions and test in an inconspicuous area where recommended. If you are unsure, ask us before applying it.

Protect your surfaces

Use suitable coasters and protective mats for drinks and hot items. Lift objects rather than dragging them, and check that the underside of decorative pieces will not scratch the finish. Keep furniture away from direct heat and prolonged strong sunlight where possible.

Wood-effect, painted and gloss finishes

These finishes can require different care from solid wood. Do not assume that wood polish, wax or oil is suitable. Avoid abrasive pads, scouring powders and unapproved solvent-based cleaners. Check the supplied instructions before using cleaning sprays or disinfectants.

Glass tops and doors

Follow the manufacturer’s glass-care instructions and use only a suitable non-abrasive product. Avoid spraying cleaner onto surrounding furniture or letting it run into edges and fittings. Protect glass from impacts and sudden temperature changes. Stop using a piece if its glass is cracked or chipped and seek advice.

Metal furniture and fittings

Painted and coated metal needs care too. Clean gently using the method specified for the finish, and dry any permitted damp-cleaned areas promptly. Avoid abrasive products that could damage the coating. Indoor furniture should not be used outdoors unless specifically described as suitable.

Doors, drawers and hardware

Follow the assembly instructions for checking and adjusting hinges, handles and other fittings. Do not overtighten fixings or force a drawer or door that is not moving correctly. Contact us if you need help identifying a fitting or replacement part.

Moving and positioning

Remove contents before moving furniture and follow its handling instructions. Use enough people to lift it safely rather than dragging it across the floor. Recheck stability and any required wall anchoring after repositioning. Follow all stated load limits and anti-tip instructions.
